Regional Camping Competition
The Regional Finals of the Scout Camping Competition took place at Great
Harwood with our very own Westwood Moravians representing Greater Manchester
North.
The event was very well attended with everyone displaying an extremely
high standard of camping skills. This made it very difficult for the judges
to choose a winner and resulted in the marking between first and last
being very close.
Our team did extremely well and finished in 7th place.
Well done to everyone who took part.
County Backwoods Cooking Competition
On a glorious weekend in September Scouts from the 10th and 115th represented
Oldham in the County Backwoods Cooking Competion.
Teams represented the various districts in Greater Manchester North and
after a full afternoon of cooking the judges were tempted with a number
of different aroma's and tastes.
Finally the results were announced and our two teams had made it into
first and second place.
Scouts from the 10th won with 115th in second place. Both
teams now go forward to represent the County in the Regional finals.
Well done to everyone and good luck in the Regional finals.
County Camping Competition
Running at the same time as the Backwoods Cooking Comptition was the
Camping Comptition. Oldham had just one team in this comptition (115th
Westwood Moravians) but I am pleased to report that they won
and will now represent the County in the Regional finals.
It is only the 3rd time since 1975 that a team from Oldham has won this
event, the others being the 128th and 127th in 1984 and 1986 respectively.
It has also broken the domination by the 7th Ramsbottom who have won it
4 times in the last 5 years.
Well done to everyone and good luck in the Regional finals.
District Cooking Competition
Despite a poor turnout, (only three teams) the Scouts presented the judges
with a difficult job in choosing a winner.

Here we can see the winning team from 10th Knolls Lane obviously delighted
with the result.
Both the winning team and the runners up now go forward to the County
competition.
Lord Derby Challenge
After coming joint winners of the Oldham Scout Incident Hike, Westwood
Moravians went on to win the County Gaddum Shield Competition. This meant
they went to the Isle of Man to represent Greater Manchester North in
the Lord Derby Challenge.
They left Oldham on Friday evening and traveled to Liverpool to catch
the ferry to the Isle of Man along with Scouts from other Counties in
the North West Region.
Saturday saw them, and another 17 teams, completing 9 separate challenges
including;
Going Underground
- making their way through a man made caving system.
Puzzled - complete some mind blowing
challenges.
Team Building - the successful completion
of this challenge meant everyone had to work together.
Building Bridges - construct a bridge
using pioneering poles.
Skypole - using equipment provided
make a radio aerial
Discovery Challenge - using equipment
provided pull a Discovery vehicle up a hill.
Emergency Action - a first aid base.
On Target - an archery base.
Let's Get Physical - a fitness base
taking in a mega assault course.
After a day of intense competition only 30 points separated the first
and last team.
Although they didn't win the competition, Westwood came a very creditable
7th.
Many congratulations to all of the Scouts who took part.
Swimming Gala
Scouts from 5 Troops took part in the joint Cub & Scout Swimming
Gala held at Royton Baths.
Although there was a number of close finishes the lane judges did a good
job and everyone seemed happy with the placings.
The top three groups were:
First Place - 22nd, St Anne's, Lydgate
Second Place - 16th,
St Edwards
Third Place - 10th, Knolls Lane
Congratulations to everyone who took part and especially the Scouts who
came from any of the above groups.
Incident Hike
Although only 4 teams took part the Scouts had an enjoyable day in glorious
weather.
At the end of the event the winning team was given as the 16th Oldham,
St Edwards however after subsequently checking the points awarded to each
team it was found that due to human error the final scores were incorrect.
The team with the most points was in fact 115th Westwood Moravians "A"
team, (originally placed 2nd)
It has therefore been decided to declare both the 16th and 115th joint
winners of the competition.
Both St Edwards and Westwood Moravians will represent Oldham in the County
Gaddum Shield Competition.
We wish them both every success in this event.
Congratulations to them and everyone else who took part.
County Gaddum Shield Competition
Both St Edward's and Westwood Moravians, joint winners of the Oldham
Scout Incident Hike, represented Oldham at the County Gaddum Shield Competition.
After taking part in a number of challenges I am pleased to announce
that the competition was won by Westwood Moravians, with St Edwards coming
6th.
Westwood will now represent the County in the Regional competition being
held in the Isle of Man over the weekend 16/18 May.
Here you can see Westwood Moravians receiving their trophy from the County
Commissioner.
